Pigmentation

Pigmentation is one of the most complex skin concerns we treat at The Studio. Like many skin conditions, what we see on the surface is only a small part of the story. Pigment production can be influenced by what's happening inside and outside the body, where often more than one trigger is involved. These can be internal triggers such as hormonal changes, pregnancy, inflammation, genetics and certain medications, while the external factors may be UV exposure, heat or skin trauma.

Melanin is the pigment responsible for giving our skin its colour and is produced by specialised cells called melanocytes. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production. Damage to these cells can lead to:

  • Sun damage – structural and cellular harm caused by UV radiation over time. Commonly appears on areas frequently exposed to the sun
  • Hyperpigmentation/Hypopigmentation – when the skin produces too much or too little melanin, causing darker or lighter areas of pigment
  • Melasma – often triggered by hormones and associated with pregnancy, medication use and stress. Often appears on the skin as symmetrical patches around the cheeks, upper lip, eyes and forehead
  • Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) – can be caused by inflammation, heat and injury such as post-acne scarring, picking, burns or irritation. Once inflammation settles, darker pigment can be left behind
  • Freckles – a genetic predisposition, usually in fair skins, which can become darker and more visible with environmental exposure

When treating pigmentation in clinic, we begin with consistency and prevention. We believe prevention is always better than cure. Daily sun protection is essential, along with targeted active ingredients such as antioxidants to help neutralise free-radical and environmental damage, tyrosinase-inhibiting ingredients to help regulate pigment production, and retinoids to support skin renewal. Consistent skincare, sun protection and good skin habits form the foundation of any effective pigmentation treatment plan.

Our goal isn't simply to treat pigmentation temporarily, but to achieve meaningful, sustainable results while helping you understand how to maintain and protect your skin long term.
