Ageing
As we age, many of the natural processes that keep our skin firm, plump and healthy begin to slow down. The visible signs of ageing we see on the surface are often a reflection of these changes happening within the skin.
Did you know our collagen production can begin to gradually decline from our 20s? Collagen provides structure and support within the skin, so as its production slows, we begin to notice changes in firmness, elasticity and the appearance of fine lines.
Our skin cell turnover also slows with age. Younger skin generally renews itself quicker, while mature skin has a slower cell turnover. This slower regeneration can contribute to dullness, dryness, uneven texture and a less radiant complexion.
As well as slower collagen production and cell regeneration, our skin also:
- Produces less sebum (our skin's natural oil), contributing to increased dryness and making fine lines more noticeable
- Gradually loses some of its deeper structural support, including changes to fat and connective tissue, reducing the plumpness and cushioning beneath the skin
- Produces melanin less evenly, meaning some areas may develop excess pigment while others produce less, contributing to an uneven skin tone
- Produces less of the substances that help our skin hold onto water, resulting in reduced hydration and plumpness
- Becomes slower at repairing and recovering from damage
The good news? While we can't stop the natural ageing process (and we don't want to!), there is so much we can do to support how our skin functions as we age. Our goal is to keep your skin strong, healthy and functioning at its best.
